Arthur Qvist

Arthur Qvist (born February 17, 1896 in Oslo , Norway , † September 12, 1973 in Ullensaker ) was a Norwegian horseman and SS-Sturmbannführer of the Waffen-SS during the Second World War .

Life

Qvist won the silver medal in the team event of eventing at the Summer Olympics in Amsterdam in 1928 . In 1936 he again took part in the Summer Olympics in Berlin .

After the occupation of Norway by the Germans in 1940, Qvist joined the SS and became a member of the Den Norske Legion (SS-Freiwilligenlegion Norway), which formed a unit of the Waffen-SS. With the rank of SS-Sturmbannführer, he headed this unit from February 1942, which had around 1200 members. The Legion fought under Qvist's orders on the German side, including in the combat area of ​​the Leningrad Front , before being disbanded in 1943. Qvist received the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class during his service .

After the war ended in 1945, Arthur Qvist was sentenced in Norway to a ten-year prison term for treason. He died in 1973. Qvist was married.
