Karl Breitbach (born May 14, 1833 in Berlin , † June 26, 1904 in Kassel ) was a German landscape , genre , portrait and watercolor painter .

Life

Breitbach was trained as a painter at the Royal Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin before 1860 . Later he also worked as a retoucher in Gustav Schauer's photographic studio in Berlin. Breitbach stayed in Paris from 1860 to at least 1864 at the latest. There he was a student in the atelier of Charles Gleyre and Thomas Couture . After 1863 he went on an extensive study trip through France, Germany and England, from which he returned to Berlin in 1864 at the earliest. In Berlin he then became a student of Ludwig Knaus . Stays in Amsterdam and Harleem in 1871 as well as in the Willingshausen artists' colony (1874, 1879 and 1890) followed. A stay in the Dachau artists' colony around 1900 can also be verified. In 1894 Breitbach was finally appointed professor of painting at the Berlin Art Academy.
