Karl Brockmann (born February 2, 1854 in Offenbach am Main ; † 1932 ) was a German mechanical engineer and designer .

biography

Brockmann attended the Polytechnische Schule Darmstadt and the engineering school, later turned to art history. He developed an interest in the artistic, but less in free art. In 1879 he was given a teaching position at the Art and Industry School Offenbach (predecessor of today's Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main ), in 1880 a permanent position, in 1900 he was appointed professor. On October 1, 1920, he retired and was adopted with a torchlight procession. In 1913, alumni of the school founded the Professor Karl Brockmann Foundation, which supported students in need.

Brockmann was a co-founder of the Offenbach History Association .

Act

Brockmann's interest in the artistic led to the recognition of the necessity of artistic design of products that should not be related to free art. This design found fertile ground in industry and corresponds to an early form of today's industrial design . The product design department at the HfG Offenbach still exists today .
