Karl Bruchmann
Karl Gustav Bruchmann (born October 2, 1902 in Breslau ; † March 20, 1967 in Koblenz ) was a German historian , archivist and director of the Federal Archives from 1961 to 1967 .
Life
Bruchmann studied history at the Universities of Breslau and Marburg, where he was active with the country teams Vandalia Breslau and Hasso-Borussia Marburg . After receiving his doctorate in 1929, he initially worked as an assistant at the Institute for Regional Studies at the University of Marburg . From 1930 to 1931 he completed the Prussian archivist training at the Institute for Archival Science in Berlin-Dahlem. He then went to the Prussian State Archives in Breslau , where he was promoted to the State Archives Council in 1935. In 1939 he was appointed representative of the Wroclaw State Archives for the Katowice administrative district. In 1940 a branch (department) of the State Archives Wroclaw was set up in Katowice , which was converted into an independent State Archive in 1941 (State Archives Katowice). Karl Bruchmann was put in charge.
After the war, Bruchmann worked at the Lower Saxony State Archives in Osnabrück in 1947 , before taking over the management of the Goslar City Archives in 1948. In addition to the archive, he also looked after the city library and the city museum. In 1961 he was appointed director of the Federal Archives . He held this position until his death in 1967.
He was chairman of the Goslar History and Heritage Protection Association, the Harz Association for History and Archeology and the Association of German Archivists (1961 to 1967).
