Karl Ebel

Karl Ebel (born September 24, 1868 in Gießen , † September 8, 1933 in Bad Nauheim ) was a German historian and librarian.

Life

Ebel was the son of the merchant and wine merchant Carl Ebel and his wife Karoline, b. Böger. He attended grammar schools in Bensheim and Gießen and from 1887 studied modern philology, history, art history and economics in Gießen, Breslau and Marburg , where he received his doctorate in 1892. During his studies he joined the Landsmannschaft Darmstadtia Gießen . In the same year he became an unskilled worker in the Giessen University Library , where he became an assistant in 1894 and a librarian in 1895. Ebel was permanently employed in 1898. In 1907 he became senior librarian at the same library, and in 1921 director. In 1917 he received the title of professor. During his tenure, he was able to increase the library's holdings by over 100,000 volumes. In the library, he was in charge of the manuscript collection and literature relating to Giessen. From 1893 he also worked in the Giessen city archive, which he has been in charge of since 1900 and which he transferred to the university library in 1929. From 1905 to 1922 Ebel was also a member of the Giessen city council.
