Karl Gernandt

Karl Gernandt (born July 21, 1960 in Bonn ) is a German business manager with activities in international corporations. In Hamburg he was involved in the NORD business association and headed the Hamburg industry association from 2006 to 2008. From July 2014 to February 2018 he was a member of the supervisory board of HSV Fußball AG , including its chairman until December 2016. Karl Gernandt sits on various supervisory boards and is involved in social institutions.

Training and professional positions

Karl Gernandt occasionally attended the German school in Rio de Janeiro and completed his Abitur in Kaarst (North Rhine-Westphalia). After two years of military service (afterwards a reserve officer ) and a bank apprenticeship at Deutsche Bank AG , he successfully studied business administration at the University of St. Gallen from 1984 to 1988 (lic. Oec.HSG), during which time he was co-founder of the environmental economic initiative Oikos and also as AIESEC president introduced campus recruiting at the HSG. His professional career began at Deutsche Bank, where he was promoted to assistant to the former CEO []. He gained experience in Singapore, Tokyo and New York and was most recently responsible for the branches in the northern Ruhr area. Further professional positions were from 1996 to 1999 at the management consultancy AT Kearney with a focus on international strategy projects in the financial sector , before he headed Alsen AG as CFO and one year later as CEO and Holcim , most recently as CEO of the Western Europe region of Holcim AG.

On October 1st, 2008 he was recruited by the entrepreneur Klaus-Michael Kühne as his successor in various functions. Gernandt started at Kuehne + Nagel in 2009 as a delegate of the Board of Directors. From 2011 to 2016 he was its “Executive President” and for a short time also CEO and since 2016 he has been Vice President. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kühne Holding AG, in which all of Klaus-Michael Kühne's investments are bundled, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kühne Foundation in Schindellegi, Switzerland. He is also deputy chairman of the supervisory board of Hapag-Lloyd AG and a member of the supervisory board of VTG AG and chairman of the supervisory board of KLU Kühne Logistic University, Hamburg.

Other commitments are: President of the Board of Directors of Hochgebirgsklinik Davos AG and HELP AG, an international organization in the field of humanitarian logistics. Since 2009 he has been a board member of the Federal Association of German Logistics (BVL).

Worked for Hamburger SV

Gernandt was one of the faces and one of the main initiators in the spin-off of the licensed players' department into HSV Sport AG . In May 2014, the majority of the club's members voted for the corresponding “HSVPlus” model. Karl Gernandt became chairman of the supervisory board of the company renamed "HSV Fußball AG", in which its boss Klaus-Michael Kühne is a shareholder. In total, more than 60 million new capital could be raised and a promissory note loan placed. Gernandt resigned from this position in December 2016 due to “indiscretions” within the council, but remained a full member of the committee. On February 6, 2018, Gernandt resigned from the committee.

Private

Karl Gernandt is married and lives with his wife Susanne and their three daughters in Hamburg-Groß Flottbek .
