Life

Karl Giftschütz was the son of poor parents and a younger brother of the pastoral theologian Franz Giftschütz . He attended the Jesuit college in Vienna and had the honor of holding a public disputation at the university's expense after completing his philosophical studies. After studying law with Staatsrat von Martini at the University of Vienna, in 1772 he entered the priestly house at the Vienna Metropolitan Church of St. Stephan under the Prince Archbishop and Cardinal von Miggazi , and like his brother studied theology for four years at the university, where he 1776 graduated as bachelor and licentiate in theology. He was ordained a priest on March 14, 1777 and in the same year came to St. Veit near Vienna as a cooperator, and in 1785 to Tulln in the same capacity.

In 1789 he took over as director of the Zollerische Hauptschule in the Vienna suburb of Neubau , where he stayed for over 40 years. In 1803 the emperor appointed him director of a poor district at the kk charities. On May 17, 1816, he received a decree of praise from the Emperor for his zeal for service and on December 1, 1818, without a request for reward for his services to the school system, the title of Imperial Councilor. On December 9, 1828, he received the Great Gold Medal of Merit with Chain.

He wrote several edifying and catechetical writings, also for children.
