Karl Harder

Karl Harder (* 15. August 1903 in Essen ; † 10. June 1978 ) was a German composer in chess .

Harder learned to play chess on his own at the age of 14. In 1924 he joined the German Workers' Chess Federation . He mainly dealt with chess problems and preferred to compose them for the meeting point motif , which goes back to the composer Arthur Klinke .

In 1926 he took part in the FIDE world tournament for three-moveers. Here he won the 1st prize.

In all variants Nf5 is caused to move, after which Nxd4 is mate.

From 1930 to 1933 Harder was responsible for the chess corner in the Ruhr-Echo . Then he took a break. It was only after 1970 that he returned to chess composition. In total he created more than 200 chess problems.

Life

Harder initially worked as an auxiliary fitter at Krupp in Essen. During this activity he lost his right eye in an accident in 1923. He became unemployed. From 1935 he worked first as a crane operator and then in payroll accounting. In 1944, Harder moved to Bad Langensalza to relocate the company .
