Karl Heffner (* 1849 in Würzburg , † 1927 in Berlin ) was a landscape painter of early German Impressionism .

Live and act

Heffner studied music in Munich and continued his autodidactic training as a painter . During his time in Munich he frequented the Lenbach district and was trained by the Munich landscape painter Adolf Stademann . He made numerous trips to England and Italy as well as to Upper Bavaria and the Baltic Sea. From 1894 he was based in Dresden, then in Freiburg im Breisgau and finally in Berlin. He spent the winter months in Rome until 1888.

His work was under the strong influence of English and French landscape painting; Heffner's role models were the masters of the “ Barbizon School ”. The preferred motif was "lonely nature". In England he was one of the best-paid masters, around 1883 he is described as the leading German landscape painter.

Heffner's work has been shown in exhibitions a. a. shown in Paris, Vienna, Munich, Berlin and London. He is represented with works in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and in museums in Bristol, Rochdale, Milwaukee, Melbourne and Sydney. Heffner was a member of the “Breisgauer Fünfer” artists' association founded in Freiburg in 1899, which also included Hermann Dischler (chairman), Fritz Reiss, Carl Schuster and Ludwig Zorn. In earlier years he was also mentioned as a frequent dining companion of the Munich artist society "Allotria".
