Karl Heinrich Gyr

Karl Heinrich Gyr (born April 27, 1879 in Zurich ; † November 3, 1946 in Zug ) was a Swiss entrepreneur.

His parents were the master butcher Heinrich Gyr and Lina, geb. Laubi. After attending schools in Zurich and Lausanne, he studied chemistry at the Polytechnic in Zurich and Dresden, where he received his doctorate in 1902 . After further studies in the USA, he worked in the English chemical industry .

His college friend Heinrich Landis had become the third partner in the electricity meter factory Theiler & Co. in Zug in 1903 and took it over in 1904. In 1905 he took Gyr as a partner. The two expanded the company as Landis & Gyr into the largest company in Zug.

He founded several corporate welfare and welfare institutions. In 1929 he became a board member of the Association of Swiss Machine Manufacturers and subsequently co-founder of the Employers' Association of Zug and the surrounding area, of which he became president. In 1945 the ETH Zurich awarded him an honorary doctorate .
