Karl Hess: Toward Liberty is an American documentary film from 1980.

The film describes the life of the American author, philosopher and political activist Karl Hess (1923–1994). After working as editor of Newsweek magazine , Hess became speechwriter for Republican politicians, including Senator Barry Goldwater . He became a member of the student organization Students for a Democratic Society .
In the late 1960s, Hess moved to West Virginia . He moved his field of activity to a movement that supports alternative technologies and renewable energies. He discussed his views with his opponents, the established institutions such as government, universities and companies.
Awards
In 1981 the film won an Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category.
He also won the Achievement Award at the Student Film Awards .
