Karl Hofmann (geologist)
Karl Hofmann (also Károly ) (born November 27, 1839 in Ruskberg , Austrian Empire ; † February 21, 1891 in Budapest , Kingdom of Hungary ) was an Austro-Hungarian geologist.
He studied 1856/57 at the Technical University in Vienna, 1857 in Karlsruhe, 1858 at the Bergakademie in Freiberg and from 1860 at the University of Heidelberg. In 1863 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. and in the following year became professor of mineralogy and geology at the Polytechnic in Ofen . From 1868 he carried out the geological survey of various parts of Hungary. In 1869 he joined the newly founded k. Hungarian geological institute and was its first chief geologist from 1872 until his retirement in 1891.
