Karl Hude

Karl Hude (full name Kristian Karl Tulinius Hude , born August 22, 1860 in Viborg , † February 18, 1936 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish classical philologist .

life and work

Karl Hude studied Classical Philology, Scandinavian Studies and History at the University of Copenhagen (especially with Johan Nicolai Madvig and Martin Clarentius Gertz ). After graduating in 1883, he taught at various private schools in Copenhagen. In addition, he continued his scientific studies. From 1885 to 1886 he deepened his studies in Germany (at the universities of Berlin and Munich ) and Italy, where he collated Greek manuscripts in the libraries . On his return to Copenhagen, he was in 1888 with a study on the textual criticism of Thucydides Dr. phil. PhD . From 1892 he taught as an adjunct at the Metropolitan School in Copenhagen. He also published the Nordisk Tidsskrift for Filologi from 1892 to 1911 . In 1902 he was appointed rector of the Frederiksborg State School. From 1919 to 1935 he taught classical philology at the University of Copenhagen as a part-time lecturer. From 1921 to 1927 he was last rector of the Metropolitan School, from 1922 also a member of the examination committee.

His main research interests were in particular the Greek prose literature. Due to extensive study of manuscripts, he published critical editions on various authors in the course of his life, including Herodotus , Thucydides , Xenophon , Lysias , Aristotle and Aretaios . He also dealt with Greek grammar and papyrus finds, especially with the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia . His text editions, which remained significant in the 20th century, were based equally on the author's command of language and style as well as on a thorough study of handwriting and careful text criticism .

Hude received rich recognition for his scientific and educational achievements. He was appointed a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences in 1903 and knighted the Order of Danebrog in 1912 .
