Karl Justin Sonderegger (born June 16, 1842 in Oberegg ; † November 17, 1906 in Appenzell ) was a Swiss politician .

Life

Raised on a farm, he received his first Latin lessons from the village priest and attended the St. Gallen canton school, which he dropped out for health reasons.

After working in the embroidery manufacture, he was a substitute for the sick land clerk Josef Anton Brander and from 1863 to 1869 land clerk of Appenzell Innerrhoden. In 1866 he married Maria Josefa Emilia, the daughter of the embroidery manufacturer Karl Anton Locher. After 1869 he was mainly an embroidery manufacturer in Appenzell, but also an editor of two liberal newspapers, was also a publisher in 1871 and 1872, and from 1889 a hotelier. At the same time he was head of the branch of the St. Gallen credit institution, opened in 1873 and closed in 1887, and of the savings institution newly founded in 1878. With Rudolf Fastenrath founded the bank C. Sonderegger und Cie.

politics

In the years 1873 and 1874 Sonderegger was national ensign, 1875-1877 State Governor and from 1882 to 1887 Innerrhoder Landammann , the office but lost to Johann Baptist Emil Rusch . He held this position again between 1893 and 1903. From 1875 to 1877 he was a liberal councilor, between 1880 and 1890 and between 1893 and 1906 he was a national councilor . He was also a member of the state school commission from 1893 to 1906 and its president from 1896.

Sonderegger distinguished himself as a liberal spokesman in the revision movement. He also endeavored to develop the cantonal school system and promoted the expansion of the roads and the rail network.
