Karl Kokesch

Karl Kokesch (born February 12, 1905 in Garsten , † August 1, 1959 in Steyr ) was an Upper Austrian politician ( ÖVP ), metal worker and functionary in cooperative housing. He was a councilor in the statutory city of Steyr and from 1945 to 1959 a member of the Upper Austrian state parliament .

education and profession

After elementary school, Kokesch attended secondary school and subsequently completed an apprenticeship as a tool and locksmith apprentice in the Steyr factories. In 1922 he lost his job and subsequently remained unemployed in the large Steyr companies for eight years. In 1930 he finally found a job as a toolmaker for the power construction company. In 1934 he became the head of the branch of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor in Steyr. Later he took over the position of the state secretary of the trade union federation in Linz, where he was particularly concerned with the construction of workers' housing estates. In 1938, after the National Socialists came to power , Kokesch was arrested and then had to move to AEG in Berlin . Kokesch was eventually called up for military service. He was taken prisoner by the Soviets in East Prussia , from which he was able to return in September 1945. After his return from the war, he was still district secretary of the newly founded Austrian People's Party in 1945.

Politics and functions

Before the Second World War, Kokesch was active in trade unions, and during his apprenticeship he already held the position of district manager of the youth of the Christian metalworkers' union. He was also a member of the Catholic workers' association and in 1927 took over the function of district chairman of the Christian trade union federation. He was also a member of the Reich Confederation of Christian Trade Unions.

Kokesch worked within the party as the main district chairman of the Austrian Workers' Association . He represented the Austrian People's Party as a member of the municipal council in Steyr and was also active in the building committee there. Furthermore, he worked between December 13, 1945 and August 1, 1959 as a member of the Upper Austrian state parliament. Kokesch was also the managing director of the Styria settlement cooperative.

Private

Kokesch was born as the son of a carpenter at what was then the Steyr arms factory. He was married to Aloisia Hörmann.
