Karl Melzer (soccer player)
Karl Melzer (born March 3, 1926 ) is a former German football player who was active from 1949 to 1952 in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , for ZSG / Stahl Altenburg .
Athletic career
The 23-year-old midfielder Karl Melzer also belonged to the squad of the Central Sports Association Altenburg for the first season of the East Zone Football League (later GDR Oberliga), which started in September 1949. He was used in 1949/50 in 22 league games and came in the last two matches to one goal. At the end of the season, the ZSG had to play a decider against Anker Wismar to stay in the league. In the 3-2 win, Melzer was not called up. He came in the GDR Oberliga season 1950/51 only on the 12th game day again for his first use, but was then used in all league games until the end of the season. In the course of the season, the ZSG was converted into the Betriebsportgemeinschaft (BSG) Stahl Altenburg. In the 36 league games of the 1951/52 season, midfielder Melzer was missing only in one game, but the BSG had to relegate to the GDR league at the end of the season . There Melzer was no longer called up in the 1952/53 season because he had been given a long-term ban. After his 81 league games with two goals, he later played for BSG Motor in Schmölln near Altenburg . As team captain, he achieved promotion to the third-class Leipzig district league with this team in 1956 .
