Karl Pestalozzi (literary scholar)

Karl Pestalozzi (born March 14, 1929 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss literary scholar .

Life

Pestalozzi studied theology and German at the universities of Zurich and Tübingen . He did his doctorate in 1958 under Emil Staiger . From 1959 to 1968 he was assistant to Wilhelm Emrich at the Free University of Berlin , where he completed his habilitation in 1968. From 1968 to 1999 he was full professor of modern German literary studies at the University of Basel , where he held the post of dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History from 1975-76 and that of the rector from 1990-92 .

Pestalozzi did research in particular on Hugo von Hofmannsthal , Friedrich Nietzsche , Johann Kaspar Lavater and on fin de siècle literature .
