Karl Rosenthal (politician)

Karl Rosenthal (* September 21, 1775 ; † November 18, 1847 ), different spelling: Carl , was the long-time mayor of Neustadt near Magdeburg .

Rosenthal was based in Neustadt as a skipper and merchant. His son was the government building manager (government building officer) Carl Albert Rosenthal (born May 5, 1801 in Magdeburg-Sudenburg, † March 25, 1879 in Magdeburg-Neustadt).

In 1811 Rosenthal became mayor of the independent country town of Neustadt, north of Magdeburg . The beginning of his term of office was overshadowed by the direct order of Napoleon I to tear down almost two thirds of Neustadt in order to guarantee the French- occupied Magdeburg fortress a free field of fire. A little further north on the Chaussee from Magdeburg to Barleben , the New Neustadt was built from 1812 to replace the destroyed buildings .

Rosenthal remained mayor of the Neustadt with its now two districts until 1846, a total of 35 years. He himself lived in the New New Town. Around 1817 he lived in house number 105 c (today's Wedringer Strasse ) and around 1823 at number 397 (today's Mittagstrasse ). His granddaughter Elisabeth Rosenthal achieved a certain prominence as the future school director in Magdeburg.

In Rosenthal's honor, a street belonging to the Neue Neustadt was later named Rosenthalstrasse .
