Elisabeth Rosenthal (born May 11, 1827 in Magdeburg , † April 16, 1891 ibid) founded the first private secondary school for girls in Magdeburg.

Life

Rosenthal was the daughter of the secret government and building councilor Carl Albert Rosenthal and granddaughter of the Neustadt mayor Karl Rosenthal . After initially taking private lessons, she attended a public school at the age of 9.

She took up the profession of teacher and founded the Rosenthal Lyceum in 1868 , the first private secondary school for girls in Magdeburg. The institution was initially located in a house built by her father on Nicolaiplatz and then, due to the growing space requirements, had to move first to Breite Weg and later to Falkenbergstrasse . After the death of her father in 1879, Elisabeth Rosenthal also inherited the Villa Rosenburg in Thale , which she sold three years later.

Under her leadership, the Rosenthal Lyceum became the leading private educational institution for girls in the city of Magdeburg.
