biography

Schönewald was the son of the general director of Deutsche Asphaltwerke . He studied law at the University of Tübingen , the University of Munich and the University of Göttingen , where he obtained a Dr. jur. PhD . He then worked for a local government in Brandenburg .

In 1908 he became lawyer and representative of the mayor of the then independent municipality of Lehe. Its most important task was a burden equalization regulation because of the students from Bremerhavenen, the separation of the Lehe area from the district and the amalgamation of the Lower Weser places Lehe, Langen and Insum to form an independent city. In 1916 he became mayor of Lehe. During his tenure, Lehe became a town in 1920 and he was given the title of Lord Mayor. He was now a member of the German People's Party (DVP). He spoke out against a merger of the Prussian cities of Lehe and Geestemünde to form the new city of Wesermünde , which took place in 1924 anyway. This made his position in the DVP, which supported this merger, more difficult. So in 1924 he had to give up his position as mayor.

In 1924 he became managing director of the Bremerhaven Chamber of Commerce, a branch of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce . He acted as an assistant judge at the Bremerhaven and Wesermünde district courts. From 1933 to 1945 he was director of the Bremerhaven - Wesermünde AG tram . He was chairman of the Lehe farmhouse association and was involved in local research.
