Karl Schmid (bookseller)

Karl Schmid (born November 18, 1827 in Meiningen ; † October 27, 1909 in Bern ) was a bookseller and publishing director from Germany who had lived in Switzerland since 1850 .

He was the son of Friedrich Ferdinand Schmid and Sophie Johanna geb. Coppersmith. He completed his apprenticeship in the Hermann'schen Buchhandlung in Frankfurt am Main .

In 1850 he came to Bern, where he worked as a manager for Dalp'sche Buchhandlung from the following year . In 1866 he acquired the company and made it a successful publisher of school books , scientific publications and maps . After Alexander Francke was accepted as a partner, the company changed its name to Schmid, Francke & Co., vorm. Dalp'sche Buchhandlung , which later became Francke Verlag .

In 1882, together with Hans Körber , he founded the Swiss Association Assortment in Olten , the cooperative purchasing organization for the book trade in Switzerland, from which the Swiss Book Center in Hägendorf emerged. The club range first moved into work rooms in the Hotel Krone near the city church of Olten and later set up a new company headquarters on Jurastrasse in Olten.
