Karl Sell (theologian)

Karl Wilhelm Johannes Sell (born November 29, 1845 in Gießen ; † December 22, 1914 in Bonn ) was a German Protestant theologian and church historian .

Life

Karl Sell was born as the son of law professor Wilhelm Sell. From 1863 to 1867 he studied Protestant theology in Halle, Göttingen and Gießen . During his studies he was a member of the 1869 Schwarzenburg Bund - connection Tuiskonia Hall . In Giessen he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. As a war volunteer he took part in the Franco-German War . Then he became vicar and pastor. From 1882 to 1891 he worked as senior consistorial advisor, superintendent and pastor in Darmstadt . In 1883 the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Gießen made him D. theol. In 1891 he followed a call to the full professorship of church history at the University of Bonn . He was elected dean of the faculty several times and rector of the university in 1912 . On December 22, 1914, he died of a stroke during his fourth deanery on the way home from a performance of a Christmas oratorio .

His research subjects were different areas of church history, Christian art and German idealism . Sell ​​was buried in the Kessenich mountain cemetery.
