Karl Suessenguth

Karl Suessenguth (also Süssenguth ) (born June 22, 1893 in Münnerstadt , Lower Franconia; † April 7, 1955 in Ischia, Italy ) was a German botanist. His botanical author's abbreviation is “ Suess. "

Live and act

Suessenguth was initially assistant to Karl Immanuel Eberhard Goebel from 1919 to 1927 . On September 15, 1927, he was appointed adjunct professor of botany at the University of Munich . In the 1930s he succeeded Gustav Hegi as editor of the Illustrated Flora of Central Europe . The focus of his scientific work was the botanical systematics and the chemical physiology of plants.

After the end of World War II, he was the acting director of the Botanical Institute of the Ludwig Maximilians University from August 21, 1945 to October 26, 1948. For a long time he also remained the only teacher of the hundreds of students who were starting their studies at the time. On January 20, 1950, he received the title of honorary professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University.

Honors

The plant genus Suessenguthia Merxm was named after him . from the acanthus family (Acanthaceae) and Suessenguthiella Friedrich from the Molluginaceae family.
