Karl Weyrich

Karl Weyrich (born September 21, 1884 in Ruhla ; † January 1, 1973 in Sontra ) was a Thuringian, Prussian and Hessian local politician, most recently mayor of Sontra.

Karl Weyrich was born as the son of the Ruhla master saddler Wilhelm Weyrich and spent his childhood and youth in Ruhla. He was a talented music student, learned violin and cello and initially wanted to become a teacher. During his apprenticeship in Ruhla, Karl Weyrich attended the commercial vocational school for three years and after completing it became the first clerk of the newly established trade court in Ruhla. At the age of 20, he was appointed office assistant.

Karl Weyrich became an avid supporter of the “Ruhla Music Association” in his hometown and one of the most active employees of the Alt-Ruhla Heimatverein. He also took part in the creation of the Ruhla local history museum. At the age of 22 he became office manager in the Ruhla town hall. During the First World War he took on important tasks in the city administration of the small town of Camburg and married Martha Winkler. In 1915 he was elected mayor of Ziegenrück .

In 1924 he moved to Wanfried in Hesse, where as a municipal official he played a major role in the development of schools and the fight against unemployment. In 1934 he went to Sontra and was mayor there until his retirement in autumn 1945.

Until his death on January 1, 1973, Weyrich supported the Sontra cultural and homeland associations. After a moving memorial service, Weyrich was buried in Sontra on January 4, 1973.
