Karl von Hampeln
Karl von Hampeln , also Carl or Charles ( Russian Карл Карлович Гампельн , * 1794 in Moscow or, according to some sources, 1808 in Saint Petersburg , † after 1880 in Vienna ) was an Austrian watercolor and miniature painter, graphic artist, portraitist who worked in Russia and Vienna , Engraver and lithographer.
Life
Von Hampeln was born as a deaf and dumb child into an Austrian family based in Russia. Thanks to the scholarship donated by Tsarina Maria Fjodorovna , he first went to an institution for the deaf and dumb in Vienna, then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . During the Congress of Vienna in 1815 he was presented to Tsar Alexander I , who financed his further stay in Vienna.
In 1816 he received a second class court prize as a "copper scraper". In 1817 he returned to Russia. After 1825 he became a drawing teacher at the St. Petersburg School for the Deaf and Mute. He became known as a portraitist in the Russian capital. After a temporary stay in London, he spent the last years of his life in Vienna.
