Karl von Wurzbach

Karl von Wurzbach-Tannenberg , from 1854 Freiherr von Wurzbach-Tannenberg , (born October 28, 1809 in Laibach ; † May 16, 1886 ibid) was a lawyer, politician, governor and state president of Krain . He was the oldest brother of the bibliographer and writer Constantin Wurzbach Ritter von Tannenberg .

Youth and Studies

After attending grammar school from 1820 to 1825 and completing his philosophical studies from 1826 to 1827 in Laibach, Wurzbach studied law and philosophy at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in philosophy on December 4, 1832 and that of law on July 29, 1833 acquired.

Worked in various companies and commissions

Wurzbach's preference was primarily for agriculture. In 1833 he became a member of the Imperial and Royal Agricultural Society and in 1869 its president, an office which he held until his death in 1886. Since 1852 he was also an active member of the Krainer Sparkasse. After the death of his father (1854), he initially devoted himself to the management of family property.

In 1849 the government set up advisory commissions on organizational and legislative matters. In connection with this, state commissions were created. Wurzbach was a member, or he also worked in an advisory capacity for decades in a wide variety of state commissions: in the basic relief, regulation and replacement commission, the advisory commission for the monitoring and promotion of forestry, the property tax complaint commission. He was able to contribute significantly to the quick resolution of the affairs and thus to the satisfaction of all those involved.

Political activity

Wurzbach has been politically active since 1861, when he was elected by large estates as a member of the Krainer Landtag. From 1861 to 1866 he held the office of deputy governor and from 1866 to 1871 he was governor of Carniola. In 1867 he was elected to the Reichsrat (until 1870). He was then appointed President of Krain in 1871, an office he held for a year. In 1872 he was raised to the baron rank.

Humanitarian work

Wurzbach has been campaigning for the poor and especially for war invalids since 1866. In the same year he founded the Empress Elisabeth Invalids and Poor Foundation with 7,000 guilders .

Karl was the eldest son of eleven children of the Laibach lawyer Maximilian Wurzbach (who was raised to the nobility in 1854 with the title "Edler von Tannenberg") and Josefine, née Josefine. Pinter. He was married to Marie Jermann (* Katzenstein / Begunje - Wigaun February 3, 1820, † January 7, 1893 in Laibach), daughter of Andreas Jermann and Aloisia geb. from Lehmann. They had the following children:
