Fritz Melchers

Georg Friedrich Melchers (* 1936 in Berlin ) is a German immunologist . He is Senior Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin.

Life

Fritz Melchers studied chemistry in Cologne, then did his doctorate in 1964 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich under Hans Georg Zachau and then worked as an immunologist v. a. active in the field of B-lymphocytes . He headed the Basel Institute for Immunology for decades . Melchers has been working at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin for some time , since 2007 as a "Max Planck Fellow" (Senior Fellow).

In the summer semester 2007 he was the eighth holder of the Johannes Gutenberg Endowed Professorship at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . The German Society for Immunology awards the Fritz and Ursula Melchers Prize. In 1989 he was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea . Melchers has been a member of the Leopoldina since 1992 . In 2002 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
