Karla Ann Kirkegaard (* 1954 ) is an American virologist and geneticist at Stanford University .

Live and act

Kirkegaard grew up in Fresno , California . She earned a Ph.D. from James C. Wang at Harvard University in 1983. in biochemistry and molecular biology and worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Nobel Prize winner David Baltimore at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research . She then received a professorship at the University of Colorado Boulder . From 1990 to 1996 Kirkegaard also conducted research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). In 1996 she moved to Stanford University , where she was Chair of Microbiology and Immunology from 2006 to 2010 . Here she is (as of 2019) Violetta L. Horton Research Professor of Genetics .

Kirkegaard was able to gain fundamental new insights into the genetics, cell biology and biochemistry of RNA viruses . She discovered the mechanism of recombination of viral RNA, the existence of two-dimensional viral enzyme lattices, which are considered to be a model of planar catalysts in biology, and that autophagy can promote the spread of viruses. Further work deals with the spread of viruses along neurons and the similarity of this process with the spread of aggregated proteins . According to the Scopus database , Kirkegaard (November 2019) has an h-index of 47.

In 2009 Kirkegaard was elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science , 2010 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and 2019 to the National Academy of Sciences .

Karla Kirkegaard is married to the German virologist Peter Sarnow , who also holds a professorship at Stanford University. The couple has one child.
