Karla Schefter

Karla Schefter (born March 25, 1942 in Allenstein ) is the founder and director of the Chak Hospital in the Afghan province of Wardak and a recognized awardee for her humanitarian work.

After many years as an operating room nurse in Dortmund, she worked as a senior nurse in the establishment of the Chak-e-Wardak Hospital from 1989 and has been passing it on since 1992 with great personal commitment and great recognition.

The Chak-e-Wardak Hospital is located on the Chak River in the Chak Valley of the Wardak district about 65 km southwest of Kabul and was founded in 1989 by the German-Afghan Committee with financial help from the EU after the Soviet military troops withdrew. Karla Schefter has been involved in the development as a senior sister since 1989. She has been running the entire hospital since 1992 and is committed to its continuation in the spirit of humanity and mercy. Before the hospital was completed, EU funds were canceled in 1992 and the hospital was supposed to be closed. Under their leadership, the hospital has continued to operate under the most adverse conditions and with the acquisition of necessary donations.
