Karsten Schulz (born June 3, 1965 ) was a football player in the GDR upper league . In the top division of the GDR Football Association , he played for FC Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) and BSG Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt .

Soccer career

FC Forward Frankfurt (Oder)

Until he was 13, Karsten Schulz played soccer in the youth department of the company sports association (BSG) Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt. In 1978 he moved to the top club of the GDR army sports association FC Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder), which was also the region's football focus. There Schulz went through the other youth teams, most recently he played in 1983/84 with the juniors of the FCV in the GDR-wide junior league. In the seasons 1984/85 to 1986/87 he was part of the squad of the 2nd team that was represented in the second-rate GDR league . At the same time he became a member of the GDR People's Army .

Schulz made his first appearances in the GDR league as early as 1985. He made his debut there on August 31, 1985 in the match on the 3rd match day of the 1985/86 season between FC Vorwärts and FC Carl Zeiss Jena (0-0), in which he played in attack in the 1st half. In the 1986/87 season, he was still part of the squad of the 2nd team, he already played 16 league games, but mostly as a substitute. He was only in the starting eleven four times. For the 1987/88 season, the 1.80 m tall Schulz was officially registered for the 1st team, but his substitute status did not change. He was used in 19 league games, but including only three games that he completed over the full season. In 1988/89 he was nominated again for the 2nd team, which after the relegation of the first only played in the third-rate district league. In October 1988 Schulz was dismissed from the army and at the same time retired from FC Vorwärts Frankfurt. He had completed 43 league games there in three seasons, in which he scored five goals.

Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt

Schulz returned to the GDR league club Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt, where he played his first league game on November 13, 1988. As a striker, he played his way into the starting line-up immediately and only missed one point game by the end of the season. With his 22 missions and nine goals, he was instrumental in the ascent of the steel team in the GDR league. Also in the league season 1989/90, Schulz was one of the main forces of the steelworkers with 24 completed point games and with his seven goals became the top scorer of his team. Under the new coach Günter Reinke , he was mainly used in midfield this season. After Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt had managed to stay relegated, Schulz added another 23 games to his league account. Playing alternately in attack and midfield, with his six goals he was again one of the most dangerous players in his team, which had changed to Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl during the 1990/91 season. While Schulz was not used in the Supercup, he played the two European Cup games against the Turkish team Galatasaray Istanbul (1: 2 and 0: 3) as a substitute. Until 1996 Schulz played with Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl in third class in the Oberliga Nordost and in the Regionalliga Nordost . He later played with VfB Eisenhüttenstadt in the Brandenburg state class.
