The Karthäuserhof winery is located in the Eitelsbach an der Ruwer district of Trier . It belongs to the Moselle wine-growing region , Ruwer area and is a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP). Owner is Christoph Tyrell, winemaker of the year according to Gault Millau in 2005 and winemaker of the year 1997 according to the magazine Der Feinschmecker .

The name of the winery comes from the Carthusian monks who received the estate as a gift from Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg in 1335 . They operated agriculture and viticulture there . In the course of secularization , it first came into the possession of the French state in 1803 and then from 1811 in private ownership. Christoph Tyrell took over the business in the sixth generation of the family in 1986, after his father Werner Tyrell, despite his position as honorary president of the German winegrowers' association and chairman of the Great Ring of Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, caused a stir in 1984 with wine adulteration and the winery for several years was excluded from the VDP.

The vineyards face south and have a gradient of up to 50%. They cover 19 hectares of vineyards on slate weathered soils in the Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg location , which was previously divided into the areas Burgberg, Kronenberg, Orthsberg, Sang and Stirn, and are planted with Riesling (17.7 ha) with Pinot Blanc (1.3 ha) . The area is fully rounded and is located directly at the winery.

It is at a level of up to 254 meters above sea level and has a slope of up to 55%. In 1868 it was classified in the best category by the royal Prussian tax authorities.
