After the death of his father in March 1885, he took over the management of the Ewald Berninghaus company, steam boiler factory, shipyard, iron foundry and machine factory in Duisburg as a co-owner . In 1906 he became the sole owner. The company was further expanded under Berninghaus' leadership. In 1888, a second shipyard for shipbuilding was acquired in Duisburg's customs port.
