The Caspian Small Horse is a horse breed whose region of origin is the coast of the Caspian Sea . It is the size of a pony, but the physique is that of a horse, so it is a so-called miniature horse.

Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .

Exterior

The small Caspian horse is 102–123 cm tall. In terms of appearance, however, it is not a pony, but a miniature horse, which has also been proven by osteological studies. The small Caspian horse has a small head with large eyes, a small mouth, and deep-set large nostrils. The ears are very short, the neck slender and delicate. The back is straight, the croup flat with a high tail. The legs are slender with strong bones and very hard oval hooves. There are mostly browns , molds and foxes . However, there are also cream-colored and black horses . There are no checks .

interior

The movements of the small Caspian horse are long and shallow. It has a fast gallop and a free, flowing natural jumping talent. It is a good, courageous horse to drive, but is also suitable as a riding and jumping horse for children. Since it is very spirited, it is not suitable for beginners.

Breeding history

The small Caspian horse is a miniature horse breed that was likely a direct ancestor of the oriental breeds. Archaeologists had long had indications of the existence of a historical miniature horse breed, but until 1965 it was thought that it had been extinct for thousands of years. That year, however, Louise Firouz, an American living in Iran, discovered three of these tiny horses on an expedition on the Caspian Sea. As a result, an inventory was made over the next three years, and it was determined that about 50 horses lived on the coast of the Caspian Sea, which clearly showed the characteristics of the small Caspian horse. Meanwhile, the breed is no longer threatened with extinction due to various breeding programs, but there are still very few specimens. In the UK there are several stud farms, where the Caspian Kleinpferd is grown.
