Castle Ruhrort

The Kasteel Ruhrort (sometimes spelled Kastell ), also known as Schloss or Haus Ruhrort , was a castle complex in the formerly independent city of Ruhrort , which is now part of Duisburg . The customs castle, which was completed in 1380, was largely demolished in the 17th century after its military use had ceased and is now a ground monument .

history

The Kasteel was built by Count Engelbert III. von der Mark built between 1373 and 1380 as a permanent house in the form of a fort on the Rhine at the confluence with the Ruhr for the collection of customs duties and the protection of the customs and courts. It is mentioned for the first time on February 28, 1379 in a document under the name "Ruhrort" (earlier names Roerort, Rureort or Rureoyrt). With the construction of this Ruhrort house , the settlement that had been in the east since 1371 was fortified.

1636 was the razing Kasteel of Elector Georg Wilhelm of Brandenburg decided, as it had become technically useless and defense both enemy and friendly forces, the castle used to the detriment of the population. Two towers have been preserved, one of which was destroyed by the floods of the Ruhr. The second was later used as a coal store, around it was a storage area for coal. During the first urban expansion of Ruhrort from 1754 to 1756, this tower was also demolished.

At the end of the 20th century, small remains of the caste's vaults were discovered in the cellars of Ruhrort houses. On July 3, 1991 it was entered as a ground monument in the list of monuments of the city of Duisburg under the number 27 . Today only the Kasteelstraße with a small information board reminds of the lost castle .
