Foundation walls, cellar vaults and a well, which is still used to supply the castle with water, come from a heavily fortified medieval fort . Eggebertus van Rolengen, a feudal man of Count Arnold II von Loon, was the first known owner.

In 1640, a moated castle in the typical Renaissance style of the Maasland was built on the foundation walls of the fortress . It consisted of a U-shaped farm yard and an L-shaped manor house with striking corner towers.

The owners of the castle changed several times. In the 18th century it passed from the Hulsburg and Voordt families to the Baron von Zeegrade.

Various changes were made in the 18th and 19th centuries: a coach house was added and an English garden was laid out on the south side of the palace .

In 1910, the knight Pengaert d'Opdorp bought the castle, which was declared a historical heritage of the Limburg province in the same year. The courtyard behind the fort and a wing of the castle were destroyed by fire in 1920. The renovation work lasted from 1921 to 1935 and was carried out by the architect P. Langerock from Leuven . A French garden was laid out on the area of the former courtyard . The moat was partially filled in. A new shed was built with the demolition material.

The province of Limburg opened the building to the public in 1976. Today it is used as a hotel, with the guest rooms also having a museum character.
