history
King Ludwig II transferred the castle Güssing to the Hungarian nobleman Franz Batthyány and his nephew Christoph as a reward for the victory over a Turkish army near Jaice. The family had the castle expanded in the 16th century because of the threat from the east. In the course of the construction work, Count Ludwig Ernst Batthyány had the fort built at the eastern city gate of Güssing in 1761. When Burgenland was to be handed over to Austria in accordance with the Trianon and Saint Germain peace treaties at the end of August 1921 , Hungarian irregulars occupied parts of what is now Burgenland and temporarily set up their command post in Batthyány Castle.
