Cold deficiency

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A cold ironer , also known as a laundry roll or stuff roll , is a machine that is used to smooth laundry . It has been a prototype of the defect since the 19th century . The cold defect solidifies the fibers and the laundry gets a new shine.

With cold ironing, dry or moderately damp laundry is wrapped with ironing cloths made of linen around wooden rollers (so-called mastiffs), which serve as a base for a slowly moving box weighing around 500 kg. The machine was loaded from the front via two protective grids that open alternately. The mechanism made it possible to open the protective grille only when the box stopped on the other side of the machine. The box is lifted slightly so that the roll with the defect can be removed. The ironer box was filled with stones, lead and / or sand.

The machine was operated by hand when it was first introduced and later put into operation by means of electric drives. With the introduction of the hot ironer , it lost some of its importance.

The cold shortage was further developed in the GDR for household use (Kombinat Textima , later Textima GmbH). Here steel springs or spring rubbers were used as a replacement for the ironer box filled with up to 1000 kg of stones. The weight was around 50 kg, today the devices weigh only 28 to 30 kg. The two rollers are pressed together with approximately 7000 N (700 kg). The mastiff (roller) is not removed. Only the ironing sheet is pulled out and the laundry is put on. With current devices, the top roller can optionally be heated so that the residual moisture in the laundry evaporates when the ironing cloth is pulled out.

As a rule, the cold deficiency was operated in commercial operations, privately in outbuildings or in collective institutions. But also housing estates that were built around 1900 often received a wash house with a lack of cold.

The housewives were in a shortage book time in the colloquially as role or lack reserve mentioned space and take charge the system into operation. From the 1960s, there were also cold ironers designed for household use. Today the old systems are already in the form of a museum.

Cold ironers are now manufactured by two manufacturers in Saxony . The demand results from the low energy consumption and the protection of the laundry.
