Kastro (Thasos)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The place Kastro ( Greek Κάστρο , also Castro ) is located in the center of the island of Thasos on a high plateau (470-500 m. Above sea level ) northwest of Theologos . According to the 2011 Greek census, Kastro still has nine residents.

The settlement was first mentioned in 1434 in connection with the establishment of a fortress (acropolis) there under the rule of the Genoese Dorino I Gattilusio by his island administrator Umberto Grimaldi . During the centuries of pirate incursions, Kastro became one of the places of refuge in the interior of the island for the population from the coastal settlements. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, a large number of Greeks came to the island, mostly settling in Theologos and Kastro.

Under Ottoman administration, the place appears in 1519 under the name '' Jenichisar '' 'in Greek Γενίχισαρ ). Due to its remote and inhospitable location, it remained a poor settlement with only 60 houses in 1856. In addition to the Athanasios chapel with the walled-in coat of arms of Gattilusio, there is the old ossuary of the village on the acropolis rock .

At the end of the 19th century, the inhabitants of the medieval mountain village founded the place Kalyvia and the coastal town Limenaria and returned to the southern coast of the island. The buildings on the plateau fell into disrepair, but have been rebuilt and restored since the 1960s.
