Dorino I. Gattilusio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dorino I. Gattilusio (also Dorino Gattilusio ) (* around 1395 - † June 30, 1455 ) was Archon ( regent or lord) of Lesbos from 1428 to 1455 .

He came from the respected Genoese patrician family Gattilusio and was the younger son of Archon Francesco II Gattilusio of Lesbos, and his wife, a princess of Byzantium of unknown name .

At first Dorino was the lord of Phocaea . After his brother Jacopo , the Archon of Lesbos, died without an heir in 1428, the rule of Lesbos fell to Dorino. From the emperor of the byzantine empire , John VIII. , Dorino had the islands of Lemnos and Thasos transferred to him as rule. With the further advance of the Ottomans , Dorino I was liable to pay tribute to the Ottoman Sultan for his rule . After the collapse of Byzantium in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II demanded from Dorino, like the other Christian rulers of the conquered countries, the recognition of Ottoman suzerainty . Despite the increased tribute, the rule of the Christian Gattilusio over Lesbos and its other areas was acutely threatened by the Ottomans. Dorino I was no longer able to come to an agreement with the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II about the future of his rule. Dorino I Gattilusio died on June 30, 1455 and since his eldest son Francesco was already lord of Thasos, he was followed by his second son Domenico as Archon of Lesbos, who initially left the affairs of government to his younger brother Niccolo as governor.

Dorino I. Gattilusio was married to Orietta Doria from the Genoese family of Doria . From this marriage three sons (Francesco, Domenico, Niccolo) and three daughters were born. Thanks to the successful marriage policy of the Gattilusios, the daughters were married to regional dynasties: Ginevra married Duke Jacopo II. Crispo of Archipelago in 1444 ; Caterina was in 1441 with the emperor Constantine XI. married by Byzantium ; Maria was married to Prince Alexander Comnenus of Trebizond .
