Kasungu is a city at an altitude of 1200 meters in the central region of Malawi and has a population of 58,653 (2018 census). It is the capital of the district of the same name , which has an area of 7878 km² and a population of 480,659 (2003). Kasungu is connected to the national power grid. A separate reservoir is used to supply drinking water. The Kasungu National Park begins 20 kilometers west of the city and has a high density of animals. There is a lodge there with catering and overnight accommodation for upscale tourism.
The district of Kasungu is located in the eroded highlands above the Dwangwa Valley , also known as the sand field, which extends south to Dowa . It is an area of subsistence and hunger. With Chiradzulu and Mulanje , he shares the lowest ranks of food security in the country.
Kasungu has an asphalted 1200 meter long and 17 meter wide runway for aircraft, a weekly market, a supermarket, a hotel, a gas station, elementary and secondary schools, Malawi's only school for the blind - run by the Christoffel Mission for the Blind - and a hospital.
