Katharina Mommsen (born September 18, 1925 in Berlin as Katharina Zimmer) is a German-American literary scholar . Together with her husband Momme Mommsen , she devoted herself particularly to Goethe research.

Life

Katharina Mommsen attended the Gertraudenschule in Berlin-Dahlem and the Cecilienschule in Berlin-Wilmersdorf from 1935 to 1943 . From 1943 to 1948 she then studied history, art history, philosophy and philology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin , the University of Freiburg im Breisgau and the University of Mainz for nine semesters .

Katharina Mommsen, who had been married to Momme Mommsen since 1948, received her doctorate in 1956 from the University of Tübingen with a dissertation on Goethe and 1001 Nights and completed her habilitation in 1962 at the Free University of Berlin .

Since 1963 she has given lectures around the world with a special focus on Islamic countries. From 1965 to 1973 she was a (visiting) professor at the University of Giessen , the State University of New York at Buffalo , the Free University of Berlin , the Carleton University in Ottawa and the University of California in San Diego. From 1974 Mommsen was Professor of German Studies at Stanford University , California , where she taught until 1992.

From 1975 to 1980 she was Vice President of the IVG (International Association for Germanic Linguistics and Literature). Katharina Mommsen has been editor of the Germanic Studies in America series since 1978 ; from 1978 to 1982 she was co-editor of German Studies Review . In 1980 she became an American citizen. In 1985 Katharina Mommsen received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class , and in 1999 the Goethe Society Weimar awarded the Golden Goethe Medal. In 2000 she founded the Mommsen Foundation for the Advancement of Goethe Research together with her husband, who died in 2001. Katharina Mommsen is an honorary member of various Goethe societies. Since 1980 she has been a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt . She is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . 2010 The Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Mommsen is the author of literary books and articles.
