life and work

Weingartner began working for the radio program Musicbox on the Ö3 channel while studying German at the University of Vienna in 1989 . At the same time, she wrote about hip-hop in the music magazine Spex . Through her experience with the German hip-hop label Rhythm Attack , which she co-founded a year earlier, she was one of the first DJs to bring American hip-hop to Austrian radio. The program “Tribe Vibes”, which she co-founded, was initially created as a weekly 15-minute contribution as part of the Musicbox, before it was given its own slot on the newly created youth channel after the channel FM4 was founded in 1995. To this day, the show is one of the most important hip-hop programs in Austria.

Weingartner lived in New York for 15 years and produced numerous radio features from there for WDR and Ö1 . For their feature “Prison Blues. The US Prison Industry ”won it at the European Feature Awards and the UNDA Radio Prize. This resulted in her first documentary, too soon for sorry (2001), which shows the contradiction between the idealization of young blacks and Latinos by the entertainment industry and the reality of life in the US prison system.

In 2005 she founded the Viennese film production company pooldoks together with Markus Wailand . Since then she has lived in Vienna and continues to focus on pop and countercultures, politics, consumption and music in her film and radio productions. One focus is on Afro-American culture and politics. From 2014 to 2019 she dealt intensively with the subject of malaria for her documentary film Das Fieber .
