Katharine O'Shea
Katharine O'Shea , née Wood , (born January 30, 1845 in Cressing , Braintree , Essex , † February 5, 1921 in Littlehampton , Sussex ) was the lover and since 1891 wife of the Irish nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell .
Katharine O'Shea, younger sister of Field Marshal Sir Evelyn Wood , had been Parnell's lover since 1880. This relationship with a married woman, which became public through the divorce process in December 1890, led to a scandal in Catholic Ireland, which was also reflected in literary terms ( "That bitch, that English whore, ... She put the first nail in his coffin . " James Joyce , Ulysses , chapter 16). The political and social consequences ultimately led to the overthrow of the politically and morally ailing Parnell - and perhaps also contributed, as indicated in the above quote, to his early death in 1891.
