The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption ( English St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption ) is a Roman Catholic church in Covington in US -Bundesstaat Kentucky . The Cathedral of the Diocese of Covington is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary . The neo-Gothic church, consecrated in 1901, bears the title of a minor basilica and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973 .

history

In 1834 the parish's first St. Mary's Church was built. Due to its growth and after the creation of the Diocese of Covington in 1853, the foundation stone for the first cathedral was laid that same year. From 1868 this was again too small. The current cathedral goes back to the third bishop Camillus Paul Maes and the plans from 1885. Construction began in 1894. In 1901 the nave, apse and transept were completed and the church consecration took place. Construction of the facade began in 1908 and was completed along with the installation of the stained glass windows in 1910. Then Bishop Maes had the interior designed, with which the work under Bishop Ferdinand Brossart was completed in 1915 after the death of Bishop Maes in 1915 without the planned church towers being erected. Pope Pius XII awarded the St. Mary's Cathedral the additional title of a basilica minor, the proclamation took place on December 8, 1953 as part of a solemn high mass by Bishop William Theodore Mulloy .

The cruciform basilica was built to a design by the Detroit architect Leon Coquard and is inspired by the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris . The three-ported facade was designed by local architect David Davis. The structure was built from Bedford stone and the roofs are covered with red Ludovici tiles. The three-aisled cathedral has a length of 59 meters and a width of 44 meters, the nave reaches a height of 25 meters.

Furnishing

The interior was modeled on the cathedral of Saint-Denis in France. The high altar was carved from Carrara marble. The floors are laid with Rosata and Breche marble. The murals were created by Frank Duveneck from Covington. A total of 82 large stained glass windows from the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt in Munich illuminate the church. In the north transept a window was installed over the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431, when Mary was declared Mother of God. With a height of 20.4 meters and a width of 7.3 meters, the window is considered the largest handmade church window in the world. Large rose windows were installed in the south transept above the organ and on the entrance side.

The central entrance displays statues and stone carvings by the distinguished American sculptor Clement Barnhorn. On the two-tower, unfinished facade, 32 gargoyles and 26 chimeras protrude from the richly decorated upper colonnade.

Organs

The cathedral houses three pipe organs . The organ in the south transept was built in 1933 by the Wicks Organ Company in Highland , Illinois. The originally three-manual organ with 43 registers was expanded to four manuals with 65 registers during a renovation in 1982.

The two-manual organ with 21 registers above the entrance was built in 1858 by Mathais Schwab from Cincinnati for the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Covington and moved here with adjustments in 1970 when it was demolished. In 2002 the cathedral acquired a mobile organ for use in the cathedral.
