Streeton in the style of Colonial Revival architecture .

history

The original parish church was built in 1822-1823 as the first Catholic church on Long Island and was blessed on August 28, 1823 by New York Bishop John Connolly . With the creation of the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1853, it was elevated to a cathedral. Brooklyn's first Bishop, John Loughlin, planned a new cathedral dedicated to the diocesan patroness of the Immaculate Conception , construction of which began in Fort Greene in 1868. The foundation stone for the new cathedral was laid and the walls were built to a height of three to six meters before construction was stopped due to insufficient funds; of the planned complex only a no longer preserved chapel and the bishop's residence, today LaSalle Hall of the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, were completed. In 1896, Loughlin's successor, Bishop Charles Edward McDonnell, introduced the title of Procathedral to the Cathedral of St. James in anticipation of the completion of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

After considerable damage from fires in the original parish church, St. James' Cathedral was rebuilt in 1903 on the same site. It was built in the current Neo-Georgian style and enlarged from bricks. Nevertheless, it was not until 1972 that it regained its official status as a cathedral due to its 150-year history. The newly elected Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral in 1979 and granted it the rank of minor basilica in 1982.

Important ceremonies also take place in larger churches in the diocese because of the small size of the Jacob's Cathedral. Accordingly, the St. Joseph Church was named co-cathedral of the diocese in 2013.
