The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Pécs is a Roman Catholic church in the southern Hungarian city of Pécs and episcopal church of the diocese of Pécs .

history

The foundation walls of today's lower church of the Pécs Cathedral date from the late Roman period. They go back to the end of the 4th century. It is believed that an early Christian basilica was located here , which was expanded to the west in the 8th to 9th centuries. At the time of King Stephen I the Holy, the original church became the lower church and the forerunner of today's cathedral rose above it. The two western towers presumably also date from this period. Construction work on the Romanesque basilica began after the great fire of 1064 with the participation of Northern Italian architects. In the Middle Ages the church was extended by two towers and the Gothic side chapels. After damage and decay during the Turkish rule, which lasted from 1543 to 1686, reconstruction measures in various styles were carried out. In 1807 the church was redesigned in a classical style based on the plans of the architect Mihály Pollack . The twelve figures of the apostles by Mihály Bartalits were attached to the facade.

The current neo-Romanesque shape of the cathedral was created between 1882 and 1891 according to the plans of the Viennese cathedral builder Friedrich von Schmidt in connection with the so-called millennium of the Magyar conquest, which was to be celebrated with great festivities in 1896. The ambitious project was commissioned by Bishop Nándor Dulánszky , and it was financed, among other things, by the income from the coal mines belonging to the diocese in the Mecsek Mountains. The plan was to rebuild the "original" cathedral from the Árpád era .

In 1991 Pope John Paul II also awarded the cathedral the title of minor basilica .

The length of the church is 70 meters, the width 22 meters, the height of the towers 60 meters.
