Joseph Hall (born June 26, 1793 in Methuen , Essex County , Massachusetts , †  December 31, 1859 in Boston , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1833 and 1837 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Hall attended his homeland public schools and then the Andover Academy . In 1809 he moved to Camden , which was then still part of Massachusetts, where he was successful in the trade. During the British-American War of 1812 , he rose in the Massachusetts militia from ensign to colonel. In 1821, Hall became the deputy chief of police in Lincoln County . In 1827 he became police chief in the newly created Waldo County . Between 1830 and 1833 he was a postman in Camden. Politically, Hall was a supporter of President Andrew Jackson . He became a member of the Democratic Party founded by him .

In 1832 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Maine . There he took over from Leonard Jarvis on March 4, 1833 , who moved to the seventh district. After re-election in 1834, Hall was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1837 . These were determined by the heated discussions about President Jackson's policies. During his tenure in the House of Representatives, Hall chaired the Department of Navy's Expenditure Control Committee.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Hall returned to Camden. There he was once again the post office owner in 1837 and 1838. Between 1838 and 1846 he was employed by the Federal Customs Service in the port of Boston . He then worked there as a Navy agent until 1849 . In 1849, Joseph Hall ran unsuccessfully for Boston mayor. He then bought a farm in Camden, which he managed until 1857. After that he was employed again by the customs administration in Boston. He also died in this city on December 31, 1859. He was buried in Camden.
