Cathedral with the monument to Admiral Ushakov

The Cathedral of the Holy Righteous Theodore Ushakov ( Russian Кафедральный собор святого праведного воина Феодора Ушакова , also abbreviated Свято-Феодоровский кафедральный собор ) is an in Saransk location Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Eparchy of Saransk and Mordovia.

history

The Eparchy of Saransk and Mordovia was established in 1991 by separation from the Eparchy of Penza . Because the previous cathedral, the Saransk Johannes Church, did not offer enough space and the former great cathedral of Saransk from the 19th century had been demolished in the 1930s under Soviet rule, it became necessary to build a new cathedral. In 2001 Admiral F. Ushakov was canonized , initially by the Saransk and Mordovia Eparchy, and in 2004 by the Moscow Patriarchate. After leaving the army, he had lived in Mordovia near Temnikow (Tambov Governorate) and died there. Therefore, in March 2002, the Patriarchate under Alexius II and the head of Mordovia Nikolai Merkushkin decided to build a large cathedral in honor of Ushakov in the center of Saransk. The plans by architects Sergei Khodnew, Larisa Kirdjaschowa and Vladimir Brodowski were approved on March 6th. Construction began on September 9, 2004 and lasted almost two years. On August 6, 2006, the cathedral was consecrated by Alexius II.

At the same time, the monument to Fyodor Ushakov was erected in front of the cathedral and was unveiled on August 10, 2006. The monument was made by Nikolai Filatov according to plans by Sergei Khodnev. The still image is 4 m high. It stands on a granite base. Ushakov is shown wearing a coat and a telescope in his hand, but without a headgear.

Location

Theodors Cathedral is located at the intersection of Sovetskaya (former Bazarnaja) and Bolshevistskaya (former Ilyinskaya) streets, where the St. Peter and Paul Monastery, built in 1695, was previously located. Shortly after the October Revolution, the monastery was closed and almost completely demolished in the 1930s. Hotel Zentralnaja was built in its place and was demolished in 2002 for the construction of Theodors Cathedral.
