The Cathedral of Gerace ( Duomo di Gerace ) is a former episcopal church built by the Normans in Gerace ( Calabria region ) in Italy . With a length of 73 m and a width of 26 m it is the largest church in Calabria.

The church now has the status of a co- cathedral of the Locri-Gerace diocese and was awarded the title of a minor basilica in 2018 . It is consecrated as Santa Maria Assunta of the Assumption .

history

On a high plateau above the sea, the Norman cathedral was built in its eastern parts over a small older Greek-Byzantine cave church, which itself probably has its origin in an ancient Greek place of worship. The cave church is the center of the crypt of the church, accessible at ground level , above which the choir and transept of the cathedral rise. The Norman three-aisled nave was built using ancient columns and capitals , all of which are different and come from the valley area of the Locri region. According to a column inscription, the first consecration of the church took place at Easter 1045. A re-consecration as a result of restoration work after earthquake damage took place in 1222, probably in the presence of Emperor Frederick II.
