The church building known as the Cathedral of Kos and Nisyros (also in short: Greek Ευαγγελισμός ) is located in the city of Kos ( Greek Κως [ kɔs ] ( f. Sg. )) On the Greek island of Kos . The church is now dedicated to the Annunciation (Greek: Evangelismós) and a place of worship of the Greek Orthodox Church .

location

The church is located at the port of Mandarki in the middle of the Platia Mitropoleos on an area of around 3500 m² about 5 meters above sea level. The property is surrounded by streets on three sides. To the northeast is Akti Miaouli Street and the harbor basin, to the northwest is Ippokratous Street and to the southeast is Korai Street . To the southwest, behind the church, is the Kos hospital.

building

The church building was built in 1928/1929 during the time of the Italian occupation of Kos under Governor Mario Lago by the architect Florestano Di Fausto as the Catholic Church of the Lamb of God . In the same building complex there was also a church library, a small theater and an event room for around 150 people. The building complex was intended to serve as the new religious center of the city of Kos and was built outside the city limits of that time. The bell tower was then the tallest building in the city. The original function of the building was largely retained in the subsequent years.

The office of the Metropolitan Region of Kos and Nisyros is located under the church (mezzanine).

To the south is the two-story Episkopio-Canonica , which was originally intended to serve as accommodation for the Catholic bishop. The bishops of the Greek Orthodox Church now live in it. The cultural center in the north still houses the multi-purpose room with stage and library. In the church there is a collection of ancient Byzantine icons .

In 2009/2010 the whole building complex was completely renovated.

Metropolis of Kos and Nisyros

According to the story, the apostle Paul himself is the founder of the Christian church on Kos. He had traveled via Kos on a return trip to Jerusalem . However, it is not exactly known when the ecclesiastical province was founded.

Originally only the metropolis of Kos existed, since 2004 Nisyros was also connected. In this church province there are 26 parishes, 100 chapels and 16 monasteries.

The cathedral of Kos and Nisyros therefore belongs to the Orthodox metropolis of Kos and Nisyros , which is also located in the church building. The Metropolis of Kos and Nisyros reports directly to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel ( Greek Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο Κωνσταντινουπόλεως Oikoumenikó Patriarcheío Konstantinoupoleos , Turkish İstanbul Rum Ortodoks Patrikhanesi , even Church of Constantinople Opel ).
